The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is a non-profit organization that acts as the statewide voice of cyclists and a repository of bike-related information. Since 1992, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has led the effort to make Maine better for bicycling by protecting the rights and safety of cyclists through education, advocacy, legislation and encouragement. The Coalition supports biking for health, transportation, recreation and fun.
The Coalition focuses their work on four areas:
- Advocacy: Training local advocates to make Maine towns and cities more bike-friendly
- Legislation: Working for bike-friendly laws at the state and federal level
- Education: Teaching bike and pedestrian safety to children and adults
- Encouragement: Promoting all types of riding, providing access to affordable bikes through our bike swaps, encouraging children to walk and bike to school through Safe Routes to School and facilitating biking through our other events
In addition to their work advocacy and educational work, the Coalition hosts five annual events include the two Great Maine Bike Swaps (Orono and Portland), the Maine Women’s Ride, Maine Lobster Ride, and the newest endeavor, BikeMaine.
